Guys' Basketball
Coach Pete Wehry joined the staff at Northland as Dean of Students in the summer of 2004, and served as the assistant basketball coach of the Northland International University Pioneers from 2004-7. In June of 2007, he was appointed Athletic Director and Head Coach of the men's team. The Pioneers compiled a 16-14 record in the 2008-2009 season, which came to an end in the Midwest Region Championship loss to top-ranked and eventual national champion, Grace Bible College.
After graduating from Bob Jones University in 1985, Coach Wehry served at his home church, Farmington Avenue Baptist Church and Hartford Christian Academy, as Youth Pastor and Athletic Director for 11 years. During this time, he was both the head soccer and basketball coach.
In 1996, he moved to Ocala, Florida where he served as assistant pastor at Berean Baptist Church and taught at Ocala-Vanguard High School. At Vanguard he was the boys' varsity basketball coach and helped run the prestigious Kingdom of the Sun Christmas Basketball Tournament.
In the spring of 1999, he joined the staff of First Baptist Church in Mishawaka, Indiana where he served as associate pastor, youth pastor, and athletic director. During his tenure at First Baptist, Coach Wehry directed POSTUP [Proclaiming Our Savior To Unreached People], an exciting basketball outreach ministry. This program involved over 120 athletes and 30 staff during it's three years, and became an integral part of evangelism and discipleship at First Baptist. While in Mishawaka, he began his Master of Ministry degree at NIU, which he completed in 2006.

Coach Paul Whitt came to Northland in August of 2005 as Director of Ministry Development. He served as assistant coach of the NIU Lady Pioneers during the 2005-6 season, and was appointed head coach in Spring of 2006. His teams have compiled a 35-29 record in the three years, including a runner-up finish in the Midwest Region Championship Game in 2009. During the past three seasons, the Lady Pioneers have produced nine All-Region players, two All-Americans, and two National Scholar Athletes.
"I coach for the opportunity to disciple," says Coach Whitt. "Wins and losses are important, but not the most important thing. I'm more concerned with seeing these young ladies grow in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ than any accomplishment they could attain on the floor. I really enjoy working with the high school athletes during these camps and challenging them to improve their ability on the court, but more importantly their relationship with Christ."
In addition to coaching the Lady Pioneers, Coach Whitt also serves as Dean of Students at NIU, and Camp Manager of Northland Camp. He came to Northland after serving over 10 years as youth pastor at Berean Baptist Church (Lilburn, GA). He has led numerous foreign missions trips, and recently took the the Lady Pioneers on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic in May of 2009.

Coach Andrew Scott has a passion for God, family, and ministry. After graduating from NIU in 2001 with a B.A. in Bible, he worked in the athletic department for one semester as an assistant men's soccer coach and the head women's soccer coach. In the winter/spring of 2002, he joined the staff at Woodside Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado, as the full-time youth pastor. This gave him an opportunity to pursue two of his passions; discipling teens and playing soccer at a high level.
During his soccer career at Northland, Andrew was awarded the NCCAA II tournament MVP and was a NCCAA II first team all American for three seasons. He was also a four-time NCCAA II regional champion and a four time NCCAA II national champion. Since leaving Northland, Andrew has played on several semi-pro teams. Coach Scott is careful to give all the glory to God for his accomplishments. He is excited to work with young men who are passionate about the glory of God and living for eternity.
Coach Scott returned to Northland in the summer of 2008 where he serves as head coach of the men's soccer team. We are thankful God has called him to serve with us here, preparing the next generation of servant leaders.

He joined the staff at NIU in 1994 as the varsity women's volleyball coach, men's volleyball coach and physical education teacher. His wife, Barb, works alongside as his assistant coach. Together they have enjoyed great success on and off the court. The Pioneers have won five conference championships in the Northern Athletic Conference (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2002), two NCCAA Midwest Region Championships (2000 and 2002), and Coach Herron has been named Midwest Region Coach of the Year (2003). In December of 2008 Coach Herron was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) at the NCAA Division I championships and convention for achieving his 300th career win. "This just means I have been here a long time," said Coach Herron. "I must say that any success is due, in large part, to my wife Barbara's great help and the hard work of the players who have come through NIU. This particular award really will not hold any weight in eternity. I do hope we have pointed the student-athletes toward a pursuit of God!"
After graduating from Biola University with a B.S. in physical education and minor in biology in 1975, Coach Herron taught for 19 years in Christian high schools and served as athletic director, boys' counselor, physical education/health teacher, and head volleyball coach. In 1985, he started a boys' volleyball program and began coaching at the US Volleyball Association level. His teams captured the California State Championship in 1991, 1992, and 1993.
