Developing a heart for the local church

Learning to pray

Leadership Campers will receive daily opportunities in the morning to seek the Lord in prayer by themselves, with their counselors, with staff members, and with fellow Leadership Campers. Leadership Campers will learn the value and necessity of prayer time before attempting anything in their day and of their deep need for God’s power for their ministry in the local church.

Developing Bible answers to questions

Through a method of studying God’s Word, Leadership Campers will learn to take any question a person may ask and answer it with, “Well, what does the Bible say?” If an answer is not immediately known, Leadership Campers will learn how to study out God’s Word to discover what God says about a topic or question.

How to study God’s Word

Leadership Campers will learn and practice a method for approaching any passage of Scripture, extracting the truths that God has said from that passage, and correctly applying those truths to their own lives as well as others’ lives.

Learning to communicate God’s Word

After properly studying a passage of Scripture, Leadership Campers will be given a chance to share God’s Word both in a training setting as well as in the camp and a local church.

Learn to leave your comfort zone

Leadership Campers will see the importance of stretching themselves out of their comfort zone to reach out to others who are not like them but need encouragement, friendship, and/or exhortation. There will be chances to flesh this out both in the camp and at local churches.

Serving with enthusiasm, initiative, and responsibility

Since the local church is the Christian’s venue for reaching our world for Christ, Leadership Campers will get multiple chances to travel to local churches to learn and participate in the nitty gritty details of serving there.

Learning to witness

Christ’s last command was the Great Commission for believers to go into all the world and make disciples. Therefore, Leadership Campers will receive training and practice in giving the Gospel (evangelizing). They will then go out under the auspices of local churches to share the Gospel with the lost.

Loving People

Leadership Campers will learn that people, both saved and unsaved, must not be seen as numbers, annoyances, statistics, pawns, or any other such thing but as human beings who have been made in the image of God. Because God loves all, so must the Leadership Camper!

Humility

It would be dangerous to train leaders and servants in God’s church without nurturing a heart of humility that realizes that “…it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” (Phil. 2:13) Leadership Campers will learn that service must be coupled with humility.

CAMPER INFORMATION

  • Application form and 2-3 references

  • We are excited that you have chosen to participate in our two-week program. Here you will find some of the resources that will help prepare you for those two weeks.

  • When you arrive: Leadership Camp starts Monday, June 24th! Please try to arrive between 1:30pm and 3:30pm, as Leadership Camp will kick off at 4:00pm on Monday. When you get here, check-in at the office, and we will help you get yourself situated in your cabin.

Week 1: Our first week together will be much more involved in growing your heart for God, exposing ourselves to ministry philosophy, and personal development in areas of local church ministry.

The Weekend: The weekend starts our “rubber meets the road” part of Leadership Camp training. We will get to flesh out the things that we are learning in local churches here in Wisconsin. The weekend will also have a time for you to relax, call home, and get laundry done.

Week 2: Our second week together will stretch us even more in practical ministry and service to others, both in the family camp at Northland as well as in local churches. At the same time, we won’t neglect continuing to develop our hearts for God.

  • Bring a STUDY Bible with you. You will find that having a study Bible (as opposed to a reference Bible) will help you tremendously in some of the work that we will do together. My favorite study Bible has always been the Ryrie Study Bible, but others are good as well. Contact the office if you need help with finding a good one!

Warm sleeping bag, pillow, towels, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.), a variety of clothes for warm and cool weather, swimsuit, extra clothes, tennis shoes (for rugged activities), light jacket, sweatshirts, A STUDY BIBLE, notepad, pen or pencil, flashlight, insect repellent, spending money (approximately $40-$50+ in small bills), camera, etc.

There will be a time over the weekend where each Leadership Camper will be able to call home and catch up with their parents. If a phone needs to be provided, we will certainly do that.

  • All food (no snacks are permitted in the cabins except with permission from the Camp Office for special dietary needs), cigarettes, tobacco, alcohol, skateboards, cell phone, scooters, roller blades, bicycles, magazines, fireworks, nonprescription drugs, knives, firearms, and almost any electronics (TV, radio, iPod, electronic games, laptop, tablet, etc.).

  • Parents and pastors should know that our staff is committed to maintaining a professional and conservative dress standard, exemplifying the spirit of modesty and appropriateness in all activities. We ask all our guests, including campers, to be reasonable and conservative in their dress and conduct as well. We reserve the right to request a change in any clothing or behavior deemed inappropriate.

All clothing should come to the knee. Slacks/athletic pants are acceptable. Avoid tank tops. Campers are dressed more recreationally/casually during daytime events. Several activities are considered extreme, allowing participants to choose clothing appropriate for the situation. We expect campers to enjoy the camp experience by feeling as comfortable as possible within these instructions. For evening services, guys in the Leadership Camp should wear a collared shirt and pants, and girls in the Leadership Camp should wear a skirt or dress that comes at least to the knee.

Since our specialty camp has you here over the weekend, we want to be in “Sunday Dress” for church services on Sunday. We want to always take the high road as ministers for the Lord in these local churches. Guys, please bring a button-up collared shirt (a tie is optional) and some nice pants (not jeans) for Sunday, and girls, please bring a skirt or dress that comes at least to the knee.
